March Garden Tips
- March is arguably the best month to plant trees and shrubs. It’s best to get your plants established early and even though we will get a few more cold nights, hardy trees and shrubs are fine.
- If you are going to plant fescue for your shady lawn areas now is the time. Five Star Fescue is the Cadillac of fescue seeds for the mid-south area.
- Start your herbs and veggies indoors to get a head start on your garden. Transplant them outdoors in mid April and you will have tomatoes in no time at all!
- If your beds need re-mulching, now is a great time to do so. A 2-3” layer of mulch reduces weeds, keeps beds moist and looks great!
- Speaking of beds go ahead and prepare your annual beds now with cotton burr compost and Plant Tone. When it’s annual planting time (mid April) you will be ahead of the game.
- Ready to plant your annuals now? It’s ok to do so as long as you are able to cover them up for those few cold nights we might still get. In other words if you have some pots or small areas go ahead. Larger areas wait a while.
- March is a great pruning month for most plants. A notable exception would be azaleas. Wait till after they bloom or you will be pruning this year’s bloom off.
- Deadhead spent blooms on your Crape Myrtles and other blooming plants. Leaving last years spent blooms on stymies this years bloom.
- If you haven’t done so yet put down a pre emergent weed preventer in your lawn. Dimension is the most effective pre emergent on the market.
