February Garden Tips
-
Late February through March is a great time to plant Fescue Seed for your shady lawn areas. The earlier you plant the better as fescue needs good root establishment to survive our summers. 5 Star Fescue is the best choice for this area.
-
Late February through early March is also the best time to put down pre emergent herbicides to prevent weeds from ever coming up this spring and summer. Once again the earlier the better. Corn Gluten is a great organic weed preventative and Dimension is the best traditional preventative.
-
February is one of the best times of year to plant trees. Trees prefer to be planted while they are still dormant. Most dormant plants start to “wake up” in March so once again the sooner the better.
-
Speaking of dormant plants here’s a tip all plant experts know. The absolute best time to plant perennials is while they are dormant. There are two reasons for this. First of all, just like trees they actually prefer to be planted while dormant and you can usually find GREAT BARGAINS on dormant perennials in the garden centers right now. Most of us novices just see a pot of dirt but the savvy gardener knows that pot of dirt will be a beautiful Hosta soon!
-
This month is also a great time to prune your rose bushes, trees and crape myrtles. All deciduous plants (the ones with out leaves) do better when pruned before they leave out. The one notable exception to this would be Hydrangea.
-
Home orchards are making a come back! February is a great time to plant fruit trees, grape vines, muscadine vines, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.
