September Garden Tips

For Your Lawn

  • Now is the time to seed Fescue lawns for shady
areas. The best variety for this area is 5-Star
Fescue. Use Fertilome New Lawn Starter when
seeding for best results. If you haven’t limed in
a couple of years that would be helpful as well.
The rule of thumb is put out a 40lbs bag of Lime every 1,000 sq ft every other year. Remember the key to Fescue success is water, water and water the first year!
  • When over seeding simply spread the seed, fertilizer, lime and water. If you are seeding over bare areas it’s always helpful to loosen the ground with a hard rake.
  • Fertilize your established Bermuda or Zoysia lawns with Fertilome
Winterizer. This promotes deep root growth making your lawn more winter hardy. For established Fescue lawns use Fertilome Lawn Food plus Iron.

For Your Vegetable Garden

  • Fall is a great time to plant grapes, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries etc…
  • Fertilize your established garden with Espoma Garden Tone. Be patient with your established vegetable gardens. Many times they quit producing during the hot, dry summer months. A little fertilizer and regular water will do wonders for your plants and you will get one more fall crop from them!

For Your Flower Beds

  • Roses will waken up again with the cooler weather. Keep them watered, dead headed and fertilized with Espoma Rose Tone.
  • It’s Pansy time! Right now is a great time to dig up your stressed out summer annuals, amend your soil and then plant your pansies. We recommend waiting till the 3rd week of September before doing your “main” pansy plantings but pots or smaller plantings go ahead now.
  • Now is a great time to plant your fall Mums. Remember to pinch off spent blooms and they will re bloom this fall!
  • If you are tired of Pansies and Mums there are lots of other frost tolerant annuals that do great in the fall. Snapdragons and Dianthus will bloom all fall and come back in the spring much like pansies do. Petunias, Ornamental Peppers, Lantana, and many others will survive minor frosts. I have seen these blooming many times well after Thanksgiving!
  • Ornamental Cabbage, Kale, Swiss Chard and Dusty Miller are foliage plants that provide great fall color.
  • Excellent fall blooming perennials include… Autumn Joy Sedum, Stella D Oro Daylilly, Black Eyed Susan, Aster, and Coneflower.
