• Consider planting 4” Annuals – With all this rain many of us are just now starting to plant our annuals. Since the weatherman has us a little behind consider planting annuals in 4” pots. All the landscape firms use 4” pots because they know that they root quicker and grow faster. So if you want to play a little catchup use annuals in 4”pots.
• It’s time to plant turf grass – Whether you want to seed or sod now is a great time to get it done. If you are seeding Bermuda now through the end of June is the ideal time. If you are sodding you have a good bit more leeway time wise but remember the earlier the better. It is past time to seed Fescue. If you want to do that wait till Fall
• What’s the best turf grass to plant? – Palisade Zoysia is the best grass for Memphis area yards. It thrives in the sun but will also survive in up to about 80% shade. It is a little more expensive but in the long run it saves you money because it grows slower than Bermuda (less mowing), grows thicker than Bermuda (less weeds) and once established requires less water than Bermuda. If you prefer Bermuda make sure you are buying hybrid Bermuda. It is far superior to the common Bermuda. If you are seeding your choices are Bermuda, Bermuda or let’s see Bermuda. Seriously though there are other choices but most don’t do well and are a waste of time and money.
• With wet weather fungus can’t be far behind – Lets get this over with because I hate talking about how to kill stuff but you are bound to start seeing fungus on your plants with all this rain so when you do use Infuse. It is a great systemic fungicide that will stop the disease and prevent it from returning. For organic gardeners use Copper Fungicide.
• Now is a good time to fertilize shrubs – Plant Tone is a great all purpose fertilizer but if you have hollies, azaleas or gardenias try Holly Tone. It is a better choice for these acid loving plants.
• Slugs and Snails are active now – Slug Magic is a great product to get rid of these pests and is safe around pets.
