April Garden Tips
- This is the time to start planting Annuals, Tropicals and other tender plants. The official frost date is April 15th but check the 10 day forecast and if it doesn’t show any danger of frost go ahead and get started! Use Flower Tone when planting your annuals.
- Get those Herb and Veggie gardens going! The earlier you start the quicker you will be enjoying those home grown salads. Amend your soil with Natures Blend and fertilize with Garden Tone.
- When it comes time to mow your lawn mowing at the right height is the best way to control weeds. Your cool season grasses like
Fescue should be kept at a 3” height as we transition into its Summer dormant season. Warm weather grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia should be kept at 2” all season long.
- Later this month is a great time to fertilize your lawn. Espoma Organic is a great slow release choice.
- Mulch matters. If you have not done so already now is a great time to mulch your beds. Mulch prevents weeds, retains moisture and also looks great! Word of caution though. For most gardens a 2” layer of mulch per year is plenty. We see it all the time. Plants that died from being buried by too much mulch. We all like that freshly mulched look but if you mulched in the fall take a rake to that mulch and you will be surprised at how fresh the old mulch will look!
- Prune your azaleas as soon after they stop blooming as possible.
If you wait a month or more you risk trimming of next years blooms. If you have Encore Azaleas after the Spring bloom is the time for pruning.
- Need to repot your houseplants? Now is the time. Take them outside, put them in a shady spot, repot and fertilize them. You may bring them back in at your leisure.
